Morehu Basketball
Since the late 1970s the Thompson family has been working to encourage women in Wellington, particularly old girls from East, to take up and continue playing basketball through their Morehu Basketball Club.
They formed the Morehu Basketball Club which has teams in competitions from the Intercity League to the social mid-week grades, and is now affiliated with our school teams as well as Rongotai College's teams. Our Senior A team is coached by old-girls Ronnie Thompson, who has played for the NZ team, and Monnie Mercury, and this year they took the team back to Nationals for the first time in 20 years.
The family was a big part of the team that got second at Nationals twenty years ago. Hori Thompson, the club's kaumatua, was the coach of that team and his two daughters had been key players. They saw a gaping hole in Wellington Basketball, where women's teams were not well resourced and very few clubs existed so girls were giving up basketball once they left school.
