Nga Manu Korero 2011

Te Rauparaha Arena

Nga Manu Korero is an annual speech competition for secondary school students which encourage fluency in Te Reo Maori and English. Contestants compete in two sections, Junior and Senior. The Junior orators compete for the Sir Turi Carroll (English) and Rawhiti Ihaka (Te Reo Maori) trophies while the Seniors compete for the Korimako (English) and Pei Te Hurinui Jones (Te Reo Maori) trophies.

Following on from last year’s competition, where Mamaeroa Munn represented Wellington East Girls’ College, 2011 saw two new contestants carry on the mantle. Maia Huriwaka Y9 competed for the Rawhiti Ihaka trophy and Nina French Y13 competed for the Korimako trophy.

First up was Maia who overcame her nerves and settled into the task and found her rhythm and was able to make the audience engage. Given the level of cheer from the audience you would be forgiven for thinking the whole of East was there.  There was a long wait for Nina who competed for the Korimako trophy. Nina was also a little nervous but settled quickly. She spoke well and delivered her speech competently.

The level of competition was high particularly from the respective Te Kura Maori that competed. There were 43 orators who gave it there all, with quotes from Buddha such as ‘the mind is all powerful’ to profound individual wisdom ‘happiness is the nursery cradle to positivity’ – in the context of the speech title ‘We are the product of our thoughts, what we think we become’.

Maia and Nina represented themselves, their whanau and WEGC with distinction. They were gracious and proud which was complimented by the support they received from their peers who were eager to cheer when needed and who also provided well deserved hugs.

Thanks also to the teachers, Whaea Ameriai Kiriwera and Ricky Prebble who were there supporting all the way, and a special mention to Mary Brophy who was one of the judges in the English speech competition. WEGC represents!
