Social Studies

Social Studies is about how societies work and how people can participate as critical, active, informed and responsible citizens. Topics are drawn from the past, present, and future and from places within and beyond Aotearoa New Zealand.

Student Work

Urban Rain Water Harvesting Project

The Social Studies and Science departments have completed a cross-curricular unit that involved students piloting a project to harvest rain water at Wellington East.  They did practical research at Massey University and had a project launch which was attended by local members of parliament.

Year 10 students spent a Term learning how and why to harvest rain water.  We discovered that Wellington has plenty of rainfall, but limited storage capacity.  We learnt about the process of Rain Water Harvesting at Massey University.

We are proud of the community links we have made, and of the impact this project will have on our ability to sustain ourselves.

Programme

Through Social Studies you will develop the knowledge and skills to enable you to better understand, participate in, and contribute to the local, national and global communities in which you live and work; engage critically with societal issues; and evaluate the sustainability of alternative social, economic, political and environmental practices.

You will also develop your understanding about how societies are organised and function and how the ways in which people and communities respond are shaped by different perspectives, values and viewpoints.

How we learn Social Studies

Year 9 Social Studies

Year 10 Social Studies

Unuhia te rito o te harakeke kei whea te komako e ko?

Whakatairangitia – rere ki uta, rere ki tai;

Ui mai koe ki ahau he aha te mea nui o te ao,

Maku e ki atu he tangata, he tangata, he tangata!

Take away the heart of the flax bush and where will the komako sing?

Proclaim it to the land, proclaim it to the sea,

Ask me what is the greatest thing in the world, I will reply

It is people, it is people, it is people!
