Special Needs Unit

 

The Wellington East Girls' College, Special Needs Unit is a happy, secure, supported environment for ORRS funded students. 

 

Students

At present the Unit has 17 ORRS funded students. All students have an IEP, which focus on the five Key competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum. Programmes are developed to allow each individual to reach their full potential.

Emphasis is also given to life skills and self care, along with integration into the mainstream.

Unit Staff

Staffing is determined by the number of students we have.

At present we have two full time teachers, two part time teachers and 5 full time Teacher Aides.

Therapists

The Unit is supported by several Therapists.

  • Speech Language Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Physiotherapist
  • Music Therapist

A Special education Advisor also supports the general needs of the Unit.

Outside Agencies

Emerge: Transition Co-ordinators for students leaving school and going into the wider community.

Wellington Visual Resource Centre: for Resource Teacher of Vision for some of our students who a visually impaired.

Tautoko Services: Support workers to liaison with family and other environments.

Unit Activities

Within the Unit, teaching can be individual, small group or whole class.

Activities in the Unit are:-

  • Literacy and Numeracy
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Drama
  • Cooking
  • Fitness
  • Theme Work
  • Individual IEP Goal work

Mainstreaming

Students attend mainstreaming according to their abilities and interests, with appropriate support by teacher aides.

 

Community Participation

 

Some students participate in wider community activities, such as:

  • Extra Curricular Activities, ie; sports teams, stage challenge, and whole school sport days.
  • Special Olympics.
  • College Sports Wellington
  • Class and Unit Outings
  • Work Experience
