Board of Trustees

 
The newly elected Board met for the first time on May 25.  Welcomed were newly elected parent trustees, Erina Papp and Jill Ford, and the new staff representative Kate Potter.  Douglas Ferry was elected as Chair and Amanda Malu was elected as Deputy Chair.  The following co-opted trustees were appointed:
  • Colleen Beaumont - Old Girs' Association
  • Yvonne Carroll - Whanau Group
  • Bessie Fepuleai - Pacific Islands Representative
  • Brett Lineham - Strategic Planning, Policy


WHO WE ARE

The Wellington East Girls’ College Board of Trustees consists of 12 people:

  • The Principal – Sally Haughton
  • Five community representatives, elected by the parents of the school every three years
    • Doug Ferry (Chair)
    • Bruce Campbell
    • Jill Ford
    • Erina Papp
    • Amanda Malu (Deputy Chair)
  • A Staff Trustee – Kate Potter
  • A Student Trustee, a year 13 student elected by all students every year – Emily Wilson and Latu Clark (from October)
  • A Maori Community representative elected by the Whanau Group – Yvonne Carroll
  • A Pacific Island Community Representative co-opted by the Board – Bessie Fepulea’i
  • A Past Pupil Representative elected by the East Old Girls’ Association – Colleen Beaumont
  • A person co-opted by the Board for Strategic Planning - Brett Lineham

WHAT WE DO

Under Section 75 and 76 of the 1989 Education Act, Boards of Trustees are responsible for the governance of schools.

 

Our Board’s key areas of contribution are:

  • Representation
  • Leadership
  • Accountability
  • Employer role
 

This includes:

  • ensuring the school complies with all National Education Goals, Guidelines and Policies
  • determining the school’s strategic direction and long-term plans, and monitoring progress against them
  • monitoring student achievement
  • ensuring that there is effective communication and consultation with the school’s community
  • developing and approving policies
  • appointing the principal, and appraising and supporting her performance
  • approving the appointment of all staff and making decisions on personnel matters when required by school policies
  • overall responsibility for property and financial management (normally exercised through the Board sub-committee)
  • dealing with serious disciplinary matters through the Disciplinary Sub-committee which is convened as required
 

WHEN WE MEET

The Board generally meets once a month in the school staff room, on the last Tuesday of the month from 6 – 9pm. All meetings are open to the public and the minutes and associated reports from the meetings are available through the school office on request. The meetings’ agendas are published on the school’s website two working days prior to the meeting.


WHAT HAPPENS AT BOARD MEETINGS

All meetings follow a set agenda which includes:

  • a presentation by one of the departmental HODs
  • confirmation of the previous meeting’s minutes
  • the Principal’s report
  • strategic decisions and discussions
  • a finance and property report
  • updates from the staff, student, whanau, pacifica and past pupils representatives
 

BECOMING A BOARD MEMBER

The five community representatives on the WEGC Board of Trustees are elected every three years.

The current trustees were elected in May 2010.
