Challenge by Choice
Last week all of the Year 9 classes went on three day camps at Forrest Lakes, north of Otaki. Students all had an opportunity to do the confidence course, flying fox, mudslide and problem-solving. They also did either horse riding, abseiling or kayaking. Lots of students pushed themselves and tried new things, even when they were out of their comfort zone. As usual, the tuakana shone and took on very adult roles in supporting the younger students and organising events and duties.
New initiatives at this camp included a more environmentally focussed approach, where classes had competitions to have the least amount of food waste at dinner times (with all four classes in the second half of the week achieving zero-waste) and students consciously leaving lights off in cabins when they weren't in use.
There were no major incidents, other than Ms Wilson falling off her horse, Mrs McCorkindale losing her jandal on the flying fox and Ms Judge falling out of her kayak twice in a row. This was due to the careful planning of Mrs Miller, Ms Logan and Ms Baigent who took responsibility for the camp and made it a safe and fun environment for students and staff alike.
909 and 953 were got top team-points for their respective camps, with 953 winning the Miller Spirit Award. |
